Our Italian Road trip was going great while we hoped from Tuscany to Lake Garda to The Dolomites. We have savoured in the best of what the nature has to offer in Italy. We usually don’t prefer visiting cities – however there was one place which always intrigued us as we had heard a lot about it and the implications of Global warming on this city. So, it was finally time to visit the first City on our Italian Road trip – Venice.Join us for a perfect Day trip from Lake Grada to Venice exploring the Saint Marks Basilica, Saint Marks Square and the enchanting canals.
We headed out from our home at Lake Gardaa taking the highway towards Venice. 2.5 hr drive and we crossed the bridge towards Venice. The Plan was to park our car near Piazzale Roma and then take the water bus to go around the city

Venice is quite an expensive place as its flooded with tourists. The parking itself could set you back 20-30E for a couple of hours.
We made our way towards the Ferrovia water bus stop. The water buses are the best mode of transportation in Venice and one of the cheapest and one which you can take you the different locations in the city with ease. A day trip ticket can cost you 20E per person and are valid in buses and trams. These tickets can be purchased right outside the water bus stops at the Automatic ticketing machines. We took Line 2 heading towards Saint Mark Basilica, and it was a cool 30 mins ride on the Grand canal on the perimeter of the city. It’s more of a Floating city and one can surely see why they are worried about Global warming.
We got off the Water Bus and walked towards Saint Marks Basilica and were very soon at Saint Marks square. There were long queues to get inside the Basilica – so we dint bother. Instead, Addy was happy running around in the square chasing pigeons.
Walked further into the alleys crossing quite few criss-crossed channels filled with Gondolas. Saint Mark Basilica, St Mark Square, Doges palace and Bridge of sighs are all in same area see below. We found a nice eatery serving Italian delicacies and they were really yummy .We then walked towards Rialto through the Narrow alleyways spewed with various luxury brands and restaurants. This place seemed very much focussed on Tourists and attracting the rich – and we honesty couldn’t relate with the vibe and hype around this place. This pretty but not for us – that’s how I’ll put it.
We took a waterbus from Rialto back to our parking and we made our way back to Lake Garda. Had a disappointing lunch at Autogrill – had heard a lot about these service stops on the highways. This was a checklist location for us in our Italian Road trip. Do I regret spending a day in Venice – definitely No. Will I ever go back again – definitely No!
Tuscany, Venice, Lake Grada and then Dolomites – What an amazing road trip it has been.
