Traveling — it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.Ibn Battuta
After spending the previous day exploring the Icelandic Golden circle , it was now time to see the south of Iceland to explore the famous black beaches and its waterfalls including the Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Please go well prepared while travelling to Iceland – Click here for few tips.
Just weeks before we made our way to Iceland, we had watched the Bollywood movie – ‘Dilwale’ which had a song sequence ‘Geruva’ shot in south of Iceland and the scenes looked absolutely mesmerising and way better than others shot previously in Switzerland, US etc. So I had to see this place and was yearning to go.

Again we set out early in the darkness with our reliable touring company (Leave me a comment if you need more details as I don’t intend to advertise). Our first stop was the Skógafoss waterfall. The Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country with a width of 25 metres (82 feet) and a drop of 60 m (200 ft). Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days and we were lucky to see one. As it was peak winter, the ground on our way to the waterfall was frozen – so had to be very careful here.
We headed further south on roads which looked like never ending to reach the famous black beaches of Iceland – Reynisfjara volcanic beach. Reynisfjara is a black pebble beach and features an amazing cliff of regular basalt columns. Out in the sea, are the spectacularly shaped basalt sea stacks. The waves at Reynisfjara are especially strong and unpredictable, and fatal accidents have occurred here – so would advise to stay away from the water.
By now it was time for lunch and we headed to a little place very next to the sea to have some quick lunch. Click here for more information on saving few bucks in Iceland on dining. Post lunch, we took stroll towards the beach and clicked some great pictures.
After a nice break, we made our way back to Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Seljalandsfoss is one of the best-known waterfalls in Iceland. It is 65 meters high and breathtakingly beautiful. It is possible to walk behind the waterfall, so bring a raincoat as you will get wet from the drizzle. During winters, its quite slippery so be extra careful.
Iceland is Truly a Land of Fire and Ice.
