Great things never came from comfort zones
One of my bucket list destinations as a traveller was to Visit the Great wall of China and this was one of the prime reasons we visited China. Having seen it countless times on my TV screens and studied about it back in school it was part of my fantasy for a very long time and I was finally close to making this a reality.
On our final leg of our China exodus, we were in Beijing and we decided to visit the Mutianyu section of the great wall – the most magnificent fully-restored Great Wall section.
The “Greatest Human Feat in History” – The Great Wall is the building project with the longest duration and greatest cost in human lives, blood, sweat and tears. It deserves its place among “the New Seven Wonders of the World” and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Over 300 World VIPs have visited the Great Wall! Over the years, many national leaders and celebrities have been to the Great Wall including Barack Obama, President of the U.S., David Cameron, Britain’s Prime Minister etc.
A morning drive from Beijing and we were at the base of the Great Wall enroute stopping at the famous Ming Tombs. We had our lunch at the foot of the great wall though I couldn’t get my eyes off it at a distance. There are various way to ascend and descend the wall – The first option is Cable Car ascend and descend, second option is Toboggan descend and third is on foot. The Cable car and the Toboggan are at 2 different points with a 1.5 hrs walk between them. We opted for the Cable Car ascend (110 Yuan) and Toboggan descend (100 Yuan) as we wanted to spend most of our time on the wall.
The cable car took 5 mins to reach the top and once on the wall I was simply left speechless. The engineering marvel accompanied by the stunning scenery is too much to take in.

There are huge crowds at the very start – turn right and walk on the Great Wall towards the direction of the Toboggan and eventually the crowd depletes. Numerous photo stops and an 1.5 hrs walk is all worth remembering for a lifetime. Its winding path over rugged country and steep mountains with flowering trees and a thin blanket of snow makes in a scenery which one can never forget.

Finally we bid our goodbyes to the wall and took the thrilling Toboggan ride down. Mao Zedong might not have been right about many things but his words did ring in my years “He who has not climbed the Great Wall is not a true man”.
