Shanghai Travel : Top 5 Attractions in Shanghai
Shanghai – There are so few cities across the world whose name reverberate history, glamour, richness and exotic promises. Beyond the veil of a buzzing modern cosmopolitan, there lies a city rich in its tradition and culture. Shanghai tops the list of one of the best cities we have visited throughout all our travels.
Here is a list of 5 must see attractions while in Shanghai –
- The Bund
Let’start with the Icon of the Shanghai city – The famous waterfront of The Bund. A mile walk along the bund shows you the two sides of the Shanghai city. On the west are buildings of different architectural styles depicting the Colonial Era and to the east across the Huangpu River is the palette of modern futuristic Skyscrapers glittering in neon lights. It’s well said that one has not visited Shanghai if they haven’t visited The Bund –and I so agree.

- Nanjing Road
Right next to the Bund is one of the premier shopping street of China and one of the world’s busiest – Nanjing Road shopping street. It is a must-see metropolitan destination attracting thousands of fashion-seeking shoppers from all over the world. You may not be a shopping fanatic but do visit the street especially in the night when the neon lights are on and the street comes alive. Open-air bars, abstract sculptures, and lingering sounds from street musicians enhance evening strolls.

- Yuyuan Garden
Right in the centre of this magnificent city is a gem of a place called the Yuyuan Garden. The exquisite layout, beautiful scenery, and the artistic style of the garden architecture have made the garden one of the highlights of Shanghai. The Garden and the surrounding market area are a must visit to see a different side of Shanghai.

- Jade Buddha Temple
Another attraction right at the heart of this magnificent and busy city is the Jade Buddha Temple. A place of tranquillity and peace which is much sought out in city which is heading rapidly towards the future. - Zhujiajiao Water Town
A little way (50KM) from the Shanghai Bund is the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao. With over 1700 years of history, this offers quite a contrast to the modern city of Shanghai. Zhujiajiao, also called “The Venice of Shanghai”, features lovely waterways, curved rock bridges, old streets cemented with stone, and over 10,000 buildings dating back to the Ming and Qing dynasties.

All the attractions listed above are reachable using the Shanghai Metro and we relied heavily on the metro to get around the city avoiding all the Traffic congestion. Read some essential tips for using the Shanghai Metro – Click here.
In addition to the top 5 attractions listed above there is one other thing I would personally recommend if you visit Shanghai and that’s to take a ride in the famous Shanghai Maglev. It is the world’s first and only commercialised Maglev train line in operation.
If you are arriving/departing from Pudong international Airport then the Maglev is a good option to connect with the city to/from Longyang Road metro stop. With a top speed of 430km/h, the journey of 30km is covered in 8 minutes. Click here for more info on Maglev passes/tickets.
There is a lot which Shanghai can offer but do ensure you find time to visit these top 5 attractions. If you have any questions around this please feel free to leave a comment below and I’ll get back to you at the very earliest.
