Visit Scottish Highlands – Highland Lochs, Cathedral of Dunkeid, Glens and Scotch Whisky
Our second trip to Scotland (Read more) was with mom and dad. It was a surprise that we had planned for their visit. We were based in Edinburgh this time around and we decided to take a day trip up to the Highlands Lochs and do some Scotch Whisky tasting as my dad has always loved it. We used Rabbies tour company.
We started early leaving Edinburgh and travelling north crossing the Forth road bridge to enter Fife. Travelling north, the scenery changes from the rolling farmland of the lowlands to forested hills and mountains as you approach the highland fault line. Soon you are on the Banks of River Tay in the town of Dunkeld. We had our first stop here to explore the quaint streets of this picturesque village and the Cathedral of Dunkeid. Today, part ruin and part parish church, the cathedral features the tomb of the notorious ‘Wolf of Badenoch’!
A short drive and we were at the Hermitage – a conifer and wooded gorge with walks leading up to the Black Linn Falls.
After an hour’s lunch break at Victorian resort town of Pitlochry, we took a scenic drive through the mountains of Highland Perthshire. Our first stop was at Queen’s View overlooking Loch Tummel. It was quite bright with scenic views of the mountains of Glencoe. This iconic view is said to have been a favorite of queens.
Continuing alongside Loch Tummel, we then head to the village of Kenmore, traveled a short distance to the town of Aberfeldy and Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery to discover the secret of how Scotland’s national drink is made – Scotch whisky. It was an amazing experience to taste Whisky at the place where it is distilled.
After tasting the ‘water of life’ and learning to love it like a true Scotsman, we made our way back to Edinburgh. Sublime Lochs, smooth whiskies and serene Glens were the highlight of this tour and more so because mom and dad simply loved it.
