You visit Singapore and haven’t explored the Singapore food the city has to offer then your trip is no where near completion. lets explore the best Singapore dishes.
We both being foodies were so delightful to hear that every underground train station had a shopping mall and food court above them. The Singaporean cuisine is diverse due to its multicultural background and ethnicities. You can find Malay, Indonesian, Chinese, Indian, English, Portuguese, Vietnamese cuisines to name a few. The food courts get really busy at 6 and food is almost run out by 9 pm, looks like people follow ‘early dinner, early to bed’ policy.
One thing that we noticed was Singaporeans often eat at hawker centres, coffee shops, or food courts rather than restaurants, due to convenience, a wide range of options and affordability. Some of the cuisines we tried were:
Takoyaki – Is a ball shaped snack made of wheat flour based batter and cooked in a special moulded pan. It has various fillings with minced octopus, tempura scraps etc. This is now my favourite Pan asian dish – Absolutely melts in the mouth.
Bubble Tea a Taiwanese tea based drink which contains a tea base mixed/shaken with fruit or milk, to which chewy tapioca balls (known as bubbles, pearls, or boba) and fruit jelly are often added.
Korean Barbecue beef with rice is another of the must have delicacies.
Ayam Penyet is a must have while in Singapore. Its a East Javanese dish with fried chicken served with sambal, slices of cucumber, fried tofu and tempeh.
Popiah is another must have – a Fujianese/Chaoshan-style fresh spring roll.
Otak Otak an Indonesian dish – grilled fish cake made of ground fish meat mixed with tapioca starch and spices.
I must say Singapore is an expensive city; however, the food is very much affordable, which makes it a heaven for food lovers. The food joints littered all over the city makes it even more enticing.
