Planning to visit Peterhof (Read more) can be quite daunting especially given the lack of clear and concise information. So I have done all the legwork for this and here are my suggestions to make reaching Peterhof easy. So lets travel Saint Petersburg to Peterhof On Hydrofoil
There are various ways to reach Peterhof via a Minibus or a Hydrofoil. But given the time factor and also the best value for money it’s going to be the Hydrofoil across the Gulf of Finland to the jetty at the end of the Marine canal.
Two companies run regular hydrofoil services through the summer months from the Hermitage jetty, and Admiralteyskaya Naberezhnaya. These are just across the street from the hermitage museum and very obvious once you reach the river.
- Journey Time : 30-40 Mins
- Frequency – Every 30 mins
- First Hydrofoil -10:00AM
- Cost : 750 Roubles one way or 1300 Roubles return
Of course the return is cheaper – But when you book you need to mention the exact timing of your return and need to be present at the Peterhof jetty on time for your return. It’s not a flexible return timing. If you are not sure about your return timings just book it one way.
There are many touts who try selling these tickets at the river, I’ve heard of some bad experiences with these guys. So its better that you walk to the Hydrofoil cash desks and buy the ticket there. Keep the Tickets and receipt safe. There is NO online booking unfortunately.
Saint Petersburg pier and the scenic journey:
On arrival at the Peterhof pier, take tickets to the Lower Park fountains and also the Grand Palace. Upper Park is free though not as majestic as Lower Park. The catch is that once you leave the Lower Park to go to Upper Park, to renter again to Lower Park (to catch hydrofoil)—they ask you for new Lower Park ticket again. Some people say that if u show return hydrofoil ticket its fine but can’t count on that. So advice is- 1) Don’t leave Lower Park as Upper Park is not that great in comparison 2) Ask the guards before leaving Lower Park. I stuck with option (1).
