Moscow Attractions – Red Square, Saint Basils cathedral and GUM
Something which truly represents Russia is the Red square. Years’ worth of history has played out at this very location for the entire world to amaze at. This iconic landmark with the Kremlins red walls on one side and St Basil’s cathedral on the other is not something to be missed. And of course Moscow’s famous shopping centre – GUM
You can easily get here using the Moscow Metro. Click here for more info.
When we arrived this place was not fully accessible as there was an event preparation in progress –but still the area was buzzing with activities, markets, festivals etc. Stroll through this area, visit few of the market shops and just take in this legendary location where we have seen the Russian military parades happen so often. Both Kremlin and Red square are recognised as UNESCO world heritage sites.
Saint Basil’s Cathedral – The ultimate symbol of Russia, through its confusion of colours and patterns of those onion shaped domes provides a site which leaves you awe struck. Seeing this in person is more beautiful than having seen it so many times on our TV screens. This cathedral with its bizarre and unique architecture embodies 9 chapels inside it. It was built from 1555–61 on orders from Ivan the Terrible and commemorates the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan. Do visit the interiors as they are quite amazing as we walk from one chapel to the next.
- Opening Times: Daily from 11.00 to 17.00, closed on Tuesdays.
- Fee – R250
Best way to get around Moscow is to use the beautiful Moscow Metro.
After a tiring day, what you need is a place is to relax and unwind. On the east side of the Red square, lies the GUM department mall – state-run department. Get a much-needed breather, have an ice cream and relax.
Kremlin with its crimson red walls stands very next to Red square. For more info – Click here
