No trip to Scotland (Read more) can be complete without a trip to the Scottish Highlands to see some of the most stunning scenery in Europe. We were based in Glasgow and we decided on taking a day trip up north to see deep into the Highlands and also the infamous Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle and serene Loch Lomond. Visit Scottish Highlands with us and relive moments of tranquility.
Starting early we left Glasgow and climbed north towards the Highlands along the “bonnie, bonnie” banks of Loch Lomond. Loch Lomond national park is home to the 311 years old Drovers Inn. It is probably the most famous inn and pub in Scotland preserving its timeless character and witnessing many of the historic events in Scotland. Over the years it has welcomed the great and good through its doors including the infamous Rob Roy McGregor – a Scottish outlaw and folk hero. The Inn is also famous for its Ghosts which haunt these walls – though we dint spot any.
As we climb into the Highlands the landscape changed dramatically. The desolate Rannoch Moor gives way to the spectacular Glencoe, setting to one of the most shameful episodes in Scottish history – the Glencoe Massacre. There’s an opportunity to stop here, stretch your legs and take in the breath-taking majesty of the Glen.
Highlands unravel its beauty as we went up further north. It wasn’t that sunny but didn’t dampen our spirits. Our excellent guide gave us a lot of stories and folklore to keep us engaged. We hugged the shoreline of Loch Ness to reach Urquhart Castle – once one of the largest castle in Scotland. It sits close to the deepest part of Loch ness and is the place to spot the Loch Ness Monster, or Nessie as everyone likes to call her. We opted to take the cruise, though Nessie seems like a far-fetched reality now we did have our eyes open – you never know the odds of something peeping out of the water to meet two Indians in the Highlands.
It was a pleasant cruise and more scenic drive back to Glasgow passing Fort William and hearing to stories narrated by our guide. An Amazing experience of seeing the Scottish Highlands.
